Shipping and Orders
Q: Are there any restrictions on shipping citrus?
We CANNOT ship to California, Florida, Arizona, or Louisiana. Once a tree leaves Texas, it cannot come back due to plant disease protocols.
Q: When will my citrus tree ship?
We will try to ship your tree within 1-2 business days after your order, and you’ll receive a tracking number via email once it's on the way. If the weather is bad en route, we will hold your order.
Your New Tree FAQs
Q: What supplies will I need when the tree arrives?
You’ll need a pot with drainage (at least 5 gallons if repotting), Super Soil or other well-draining soil, and water to get started!
Q: Can I keep the tree in the pot it comes in?
Yes, if you don’t have any supplies and you aren’t ready to repot, you can keep your tree in the container it ships in for a few months.
Q: How do I keep it alive when it arrives?
Simple steps:
• Unbox immediately
• Place the tree in partial shade for the first few days. Protect from any cold weather under 50°F.
• Water thoroughly (until it drains out the bottom) daily for two weeks.
• Then move to a sunny spot (6–8 hours of direct light)
Follow the quick-start guide included in your box!
Q: Will I receive care instructions with my tree?
Yes! Every order includes our printed Quick Start Guide, and you’ll also receive a digital full care guide by email. This walks you through watering, soil, pests, pruning, fertilizing, and more. No guesswork required.
Q: What's the white coating on the bottom of the trunk of my tree?
That white oil is applied to help you visually identify the grafting junction. It’s completely safe and made with natural oils. You don’t need to reapply it unless you want to, but it’s helpful for maintenance and spotting sucker growth.
Q: My tree came with a black straw on the trunk—what is that for?
The black straw is a physical barrier to help suppress rootstock sucker growth below the graft junction. It also makes the graft junction easier to find. The straw will naturally fall off as the trunk thickens, but you can remove and replace it if needed (especially during pest treatments).
Q: What will my tree look like when it arrives?
Your tree will be:
• ~12" tall or taller, depending on variety and season
• Healthy, pruned, and grafted
• May have young leaves, flowers, or baby fruit, depending on the season
Don’t worry if it looks a little sleepy—shipping stress is normal. It will perk up quickly with water and sunlight.
Q: How fast will it grow?
Most customers see noticeable growth within weeks, and see fruit in 24 months, depending on variety and care. We use Dr. Mani's micro-budding method to ensure early fruiting and strong root systems.
Q: Is this tree guaranteed?
Yes. We guarantee your tree arrives alive and healthy, or we’ll replace it. Just follow the included care steps and contact us within 30 days if there’s an issue. We’re here to help!
Is This Tree Grafted?
Q: Are your citrus trees grafted?
Yes, all our citrus trees are professionally grafted, using Dr. Mani Skaria’s proprietary micro-budding method for faster fruiting and stronger resistance.
Q: Why shouldn’t I grow citrus from seed?
Seed-grown trees take 6–8 years (or more) to fruit and may not produce quality fruit at all. Grafting clones the genetics of a proven "mother tree" with great taste, production, and resilience.
Q: Are your trees on dwarfing rootstock?
No, our trees are on vigorous and hearty rootstock — mostly Brazilian Sour Orange or Volkamer Lemon.
Q: My grafted tree lost all its leaves after cold exposure but came back lanky. Is that normal?
That new lanky growth may be coming from the rootstock. Check where it’s growing from. If it’s below the graft junction or has very different leaves, it's likely rootstock growth and should be removed.
Q: What’s the difference between sucker growth and regular branches?
Suckers grow below the graft junction (usually from the rootstock) and don’t produce edible fruit. They often grow fast and straight, with different leaves than the grafted variety. Always prune suckers to redirect energy to the grafted top.

Crab, Kelp & Amino Acids feeds plants slowly and steadily, without burning them or shocking the soil.
Strengthens stems, boosts roots, and supports the natural defenses plants use to stay healthy.
Works for citrus, tropicals, vegetables, lawns, trees, flowers, shrubs, and even houseplants.
It’s clean, natural plant nutrition that helps everything grow better — without the chemical downsides.

If Your Plants Could Choose Their Fertilizer, They’d Choose This
Most fertilizers blast plants with harsh salts which damages roots and leaves plants weaker later.
This blend feeds plants gently, consistently, and safely — the way nature does.
Your plants can feel the difference.
Why Most Fertilizers Hurt More Than They Help
Many store fertilizers use synthetic salts that shock roots, burn leaves, and kill helpful microbes in the soil.
Your plants grow fast for a moment… then crash.Crab, Kelp & Amino is different. It feeds slowly, steadily, and safely—so plants can grow strong without stress.
Then the soil becomes harder, weaker, and more lifeless every month.
Plants don’t want chemical fire. They want real food that supports long-term strength.
🍋 Real Growers. Real Lemons. Real Joy.
Slow-Release Strength for Lasting Growth
This slow-release fertilizer has helped my citrus collection immensely. I live in an area where we get substantial amounts of rain, which creates a nutrient deficiency. Since using this crab, kelp, and amino formula, my citrus are thriving and throwing out a ton of new growth.

The Expert's Choice for Container Growers
If you're a containerized grower. Here's a review of Dr Mani’s Magic, the newest 6-4-4 or 7-4-4 fertilizer. The fertilizer by itself is highly dense, which means your application rates are small. Depending on your growing conditions, you'll use either more or less of the product. The smell factor is really pleasant, and it isn't sulfur-based, and its scent reminds you found inside of those fish food canisters. Courtesy of the use of cold-pressed kelp meal provides Dr. Mani with a complete and very comprehensive 60 micronutrients in his formula. One thing to note about using this type of fertilizer, on its own, it does work. However, if you want to extract its full properties, you'll need to use Dr. Mani's comprehensive Microbial Mix 2-0-4, or his updated 2025 Plant Booster formula. The fertilizer comes in two container sizes, 2 or 10-pound bags. I'll recommend using the soil drench method with your plants, after you've fertilized them, especially if grown in containers. Please be patient with his formula, because it takes 3 to 4 weeks to see any results. Moreover, after a month, you can top spray, using the microbial solution onto the tree's soil, and don't forget to water it in. All in all, I highly recommend this very high-quality fertilizer for all of your tropical plants, and even succulents. One side note: if your plants are grown indoors, be very careful of the usage of your air conditioner. Due to its cooler, drier air, it will stunt your plant's growth, along with the soil's microbial colonies' activities. Finally, stay within a narrow range of your indoor temperatures between 78°F - 84°F, and with correct humidity levels, to ensure your plant's proper growth.

Grafting & Suckers
Q: Are your citrus trees grafted?
Yes, all our citrus trees are professionally grafted, using Dr. Mani Skaria’s proprietary micro-budding method for faster fruiting and stronger resistance.
Q: Why shouldn’t I grow citrus from seed?
Seed-grown trees take 6–8 years (or more) to fruit and may not produce quality fruit at all. Grafting clones the genetics of a proven "mother tree" with great taste, production, and resilience.
Q: Are your trees on dwarfing rootstock?
No, our trees are on vigorous and hearty rootstock, mostly Brazilian Sour Orange or Volkamer Lemon.
Temperature & Weather
Q: Can citrus trees handle frost or cold weather?
Citrus is cold-sensitive, but our trees are grafted onto rootstocks that offer increased cold tolerance. Still, protect them during freezes with lights or by bringing them indoors.
Q: What’s the best environment for citrus trees?
Warm, sunny locations with good airflow. Indoors with grow lights will work done for sour varieties.
Q: Can I grow citrus trees in containers?
Absolutely! Citrus trees do great in pots and often fruit better in them. Just use the right soil (like Super Soil) and make sure the pot has drainage holes.
Q: How do I protect my tree from extreme heat in the summer?
Use shade cloth or place your potted tree in partial shade during peak afternoon sun. Water early in the day, use mulch or rice hulls, and avoid fertilizer during heatwaves, as it can stress the plant.
Q: Can I grow citrus trees indoors year-round?
Yes, citrus trees can be grown indoors if they receive plenty of light. Maximize sunlight if you can by placing the trees near a south-facing window or use a strong grow light to ensure 6–8 hours of direct light per day. Good airflow and humidity also help indoor trees thrive. In order to have proper fruit development though, pick a sour variety, a citron, or a kumquat. Mandarins are also a possibility.
Q: Can I plant my citrus tree in the ground eventually?
For the vast majority of people…NO! Citrus trees only thrive in the ground in USDA zones 9–11 - the very southernmost states. This is because you can’t bring them indoors or protect them during freezes. You would need a greenhouse.
Q: Is it okay to leave my citrus tree outside in winter?
Only if temperatures won’t drop below 32°F for long. Bring potted trees indoors or to a protected area when temps dip into the 30s. Use Christmas lights and frost cloth for emergency protection if needed. Citrus doesn’t like the cold!
Watering & Soil
Q: What type of soil is best for citrus?
Our Super Soil is ideal—a mineral-based blend (coco coir, sandy loam, and rice hulls) that drains well and resists compaction, preventing root rot.
Q: How often should I water my citrus tree?
Water deeply (drench) when the top 2" of soil is dry. In summer, this may be every day. In winter, much less. You can also check pot weight as a proxy. Our care guide will give you an idea of how often to water.
Q: How can I tell if my citrus tree is getting too much water?
Signs include yellowing leaves with soft or mushy bases, soggy soil that stays wet, or mold/fungus at the base. Let the soil dry out fully before watering again. Make sure your pot has excellent drainage and use a mineral-based soil like Super Soil to prevent rot.
Flowering & Fruit
Q: When will my citrus tree bear fruit?
Our grafted trees can fruit in as little as 2 years. Let the tree build strength first; it needs 30+ leaves per fruit. Don’t worry if flowers fall off early; that’s normal self-regulation.
Q: How do I know when fruit is ripe?
Look for color and slight softness, and try tasting it!. Citrus does not ripen off the tree, so pick it only once it has developed taste!
Q: My citrus flowers are falling off before fruit sets. Is that normal?
Yes! Citrus trees naturally shed flowers they can't support. This is especially common in the first year. Keep fertilizing monthly, ensure 30+ leaves per fruit, and trust your tree’s instincts—it’s self-regulating energy and health.
Q: Why is my tree not flowering or setting fruit yet?
Citrus trees need time to build strength before they can support fruit. In the first year or two, the tree focuses on growing leaves and roots. You’ll need about 30–50 healthy leaves per fruit for proper development. Be patient and follow the Three Plant Pillars for best results.
Q: Should I let my citrus tree fruit the first year?
You may prune flowers the first year to allow the tree to establish strong roots and leaves. If you choose to leave a few flowers, that’s okay—just know that it may slow down the tree’s growth.
Pests & Disease
Q: What pests and diseases affect citrus?
Common pests: aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, mealybugs, scale, and citrus thrips. Use a combo of DE + sulfur and Castile soap. Common diseases: citrus greening, tristeza, root rot. Prevention is key—use certified trees and proper care products. See our Care Guide for extensive information on Pest & Diseases
Fertilizer & Nutrition
Q: How do I fertilize my citrus tree?
Monthly during spring to early fall. Dr. Mani’s Magic (7-4-4) contains kelp, crab, amino acids, volcanic ash, and micronutrients—all in one simple mix.
Q: Why not use regular potting mix or synthetic fertilizer?
Potting mix decomposes, blocks oxygen, and causes root rot. Salt-based fertilizer kills microbes. Use Super Soil + CKAA for living, oxygen-rich soil and long-term root health.
Q: What is Plant Super Boost?
It’s our biological activator made of live microbes! It adds nitrogen-fixing bacteria and fungi to your soil so your plant pulls nitrogen from the air, not a bag.
Q: What does it mean if new citrus leaves are very pale or yellow-green?
This is usually a sign of iron or nitrogen deficiency. Use a complete fertilizer like Dr. Mani’s Magic (7-4-4) with micronutrients. You can also supplement with chelated iron if needed. If the problem persists, check root health and soil pH.
Leaves & Pruning
Q: Why are my citrus leaves curling or folding inward?
Leaf curling can result from heat stress, lack of water, or pest pressure (like aphids or thrips). Check for pests under the leaves and ensure you’re watering deeply and consistently. If it's very hot, some leaf curl is a self-defense response and may resolve with evening watering.
Q: My tree is dropping leaves—what’s causing this?
Citrus trees drop leaves for a few reasons: sudden temperature changes, overwatering, underwatering, or after being moved. Don’t panic. Focus on stabilizing temperature, watering consistently, and using Super Soil for excellent drainage and root aeration.
Q: Why does my citrus tree have thorns? Is that normal?
Yes, it’s completely normal—especially in young or juvenile citrus trees. Thorns serve a protective purpose in nature, discouraging animals from eating tender branches. Over time, as the tree matures, it typically produces fewer thorns.
Q: When is the best time to prune my citrus tree?
Prune in early spring or midsummer—never in late fall or right before a cold snap. Pruning too late in the season encourages tender new growth that can be damaged by cold weather.

Excellent service all the way around
So when the first lemon tree arrived, it was very sad, and all the leaves were droopy. I contacted support to see if that was normal. They told me the tree had apparently been affected by the weather during shipping. And give me some tips to try to make it better. When that failed, they sent me another tree. This tree is big, beautiful, and the leaves are happy. It's been transplanted in its pot for 24 hours now, and it looks just as beautiful now as it did when it arrived. The customer support at US Citrus Nursery is excellent. I received emails nearly every day checking up on my tree and offering help with advice. I was able to send them pictures so they could see what was going on. This company takes its customers seriously and cares about them. Where else do you find personal service like that? Nowhere else that I know of. And my husband and I love to support small businesses instead of big chains. Anyhow, if this Lemon tree grows well, like I'm expecting, I'm totally going back for an orange tree, and my husband wants a lime tree. I completely recommend this company; you won't be disappointed with their products, their service, or their super-fast shipping. A+++
gorgeous trees
The beautiful trees I received were impeccably packaged. They arrived safely and were easy to remove from the box. It seems a lot of care goes into growing these gorgeous trees as well as protecting them during the shipment process. The PDF care guide was thoughtfully written and overflowing with wonderful suggestions. I also enjoy reading the ‘Citrus Simplified' blog on the website and look forward to watching my little citrus babies grow. Thank you, US Citrus Nursery! Your customer service is truly a class above the rest!!

wonderful plants
I bought three citrus trees from US citrus and they all came in wonderful condition. My son and I started a garden this year to get him off the iPad. He has enjoyed seeing all these wonderful plants come in and helping me take care of them!

came healthy and well packaged
Tree came healthy and well packaged! Repotted the tree and is still doing well indoors! I bought a Marrs Orange too! I love that every order came with rice hulls and Dr. Manis microbial juice! Will buy more citrus!!! 🍊🍊🍊
completely intact, verdant green
I was so impressed with the quality and freshness of the trees I ordered. They arrived completely intact, verdant green, and the soil was moist. I have had poor experiences with mail-order plants, but this is now my go-to supplier. I cannot wait for my first lemons, key limes, and blood oranges to start producing!!!

UPDATE: I have named my plant Dundee
I am so excited. For years, I have been trying to find Australian Finger Limes in Texas...I mean YEARS. I first tried them way back in 2011. When I saw them and tasted them, my mind was completely blown 🤯. So, since then, I have been searching for a way to get a plant. Summer after Summer and all the other months, I have envisioned myself kicking back outside with a cold beer. I lean over and pluck a finger lime from the bush, only arm's length away. I cut it open ( I always have a pocket knife) and squeeze its pulpy citrus caviar into my beer. It was a dream. UNTIL MONDAY! Finally, I found a company from Texas that actually carries them, and they ship them to your home. I was skeptical at first, but I thought I would take a chance. Such an awesome experience. These guys were fantastic communicators. I knew they got my order. I knew when the plant shipped. I got updates during shipping. When the plant arrived. They even sent me videos on how to transplant into a bigger pot. The rest is up to me. I am hoping I can keep this guy alive and that it will produce for me those delicious balls of citrus love of which I have been dreaming for years! UPDATE: I have named my plant Dundee

The best shipping I have ever received...
Honestly, this was the best shipping of any object I think I have ever received, much less something truly difficult like a living plant. The tree was in absolutely perfect condition. The tree has quickly potted/transferred well and has multiple new shoots coming from the stalk that was sent to me. Did I say simply gorgeous packing? I want to keep ordering from you just to see the packing jobs, but alas, my wife believes I have filled out the available space for plants already. Thank you. Your company is solidly on point.
-Gabriel W.
Fastest shipping, hand down!
Trees arrived a couple of days after I ordered them. They arrived very healthy-looking, and they were packed very well. Best experience with ordering a fruit tree online, as I have used many bigger nurseries for lots of other trees in my orchard. Hands down the fastest shipping. Definitely will order from here again.
-Raybon Z.
They teleported my plant?!
Yes! Yes! Yes! I LOVE my plants! They arrived quickly, well wrapped, and healthy! Seems like I selected 'pay' and they arrived the next day. I'm also in Texas; however, this speaks to the efficiency exhibited. I'll be ordering another tree within a couple of weeks.
-Detra H.
Perfect, safe packaging
Perfect addition. I was hesitant to order a tree online, but I'm glad I ordered one through US Citrus Nursery. I received my tree quicker than expected and in the perfect, safe packaging. I love it and it's a perfect addition to my patio garden. I'm very satisfied and will purchase other citrus trees from US Citrus.

Even the packaging for shipping is done right!
I am from South Texas, and saw this small company from down south, so I figured I would give them the business. I am a chef, so small details are very important to me. Wow, packaging for shipping is nothing like have seen from any other vendor that ships trees, plants, or herbs to me. The tree looks in great shape and very healthy. Can wait to harvest some finger limes from it to add to my fresh oysters on my food truck as a special. Chef Mario Austin, TX

From The Desk Of Dr. Mani Skaria, Phd
Founder of US Citrus & Dr. Mani’s Magic • Inventor of Micro-Budding • Founder of the Texas Clean Citrus Program • Professor Emeritus Texas A&M University
Dear Garden Lover,
You may have tried and given up before.
Citrus trees and gardens looking tired, drooping leaves, yellow fruit. You carefully water and fertilize… but everything still struggles.
Let me tell you the truth…It’s not your fault.
Want to know the dirty little secret that I found out?
We’ve all been lied to!
The gardening world is full of products that look fancy… but are actually a net negative.
The Big Chemical companies sell fertilizers are loaded with salts that burn your roots. The Big Box stores stock potting mixes that are decomposing rot that choke your plants, and absolutely everything is lacking beneficial bacteria and fungi!
And even though I invented micro-budding, founded the clean citrus program in Texas, and had all the academic credentials, I still had to experience this pain myself!
My own trees suffered until I discovered what truly matters…the Three Plant Pillars that every plant needs to thrive:
1. Live microbes that unlock nutrients and boost roots
2. Organic fertilizer that feeds, not burns
3. Mineral-based soil that lets roots breathe
That’s why I created Plant Super Boost, Crab, Kelp & Amino Acids (7-4-4), and Super Soil.
To give trees real power. From the roots on up, everything you need and nothing you don’t. Perfected on thousands of plants of every kind.
And if you’ve got one of our micro-budded trees in your hands, know this:
You’re holding science, care, and a little Texas magic.
And you don’t have a brown thumb...you just need the right tools and the right information!
